How to Replace Side Brushes on Shark Ion Robot Vacuums

Side brushes are the spinning star-shaped brushes on the underside of your Shark Ion robot vacuum. They sweep debris from edges and corners into the suction path. Side brushes are a wear item — they typically need replacement every 3 to 6 months depending on how often you run your robot. This guide covers replacement in under 5 minutes with no tools required.

Compatible Shark Ion Models

This guide applies to the following Shark Ion robot vacuum models:

  • Shark Ion RV750
  • Shark Ion RV761
  • Shark Ion RV850
  • Shark Ion RV851WV
  • Shark Ion RV1000S
  • Shark Ion RV1001AE
  • Shark Ion AV970
  • Shark Ion AV972
  • Shark Ion AV2001WD

Signs Your Side Brushes Need Replacement

Side brushes should be replaced when you notice any of the following:

  • Bristles are bent, frayed, or missing
  • The brush no longer spins freely
  • Debris is not being swept toward the suction inlet
  • The robot leaves visible lines of debris along walls and baseboards
  • The side brush motor error is displayed (if the brush is jammed)

What You'll Need

  • Replacement Shark Ion side brushes (sold in pairs)
  • No tools required — side brushes snap on and off

Step 1: Power Off the Robot

Press the power button to turn off your Shark Ion robot. Flip it upside down on a clean surface. You'll see one or two side brushes — small star-shaped spinning brushes near the front edges of the robot.

Step 2: Remove the Old Side Brush

Each side brush is attached to a small post on the underside of the robot. To remove it, simply pull the side brush straight up and off the post. No screws or tools are needed. The brush should come off with a firm, steady pull. If it's stuck due to hair or debris wrapped around the post, use scissors to cut away the tangle first.

Step 3: Clean the Side Brush Post

Before installing the new brush, inspect the side brush post for hair, string, or debris wrapped around its base. Clean the post thoroughly — buildup here can cause the new brush to spin unevenly or wear out faster. A toothpick or tweezers work well for removing tightly wound debris.

Step 4: Install the New Side Brush

Align the center hole of the new side brush with the post on the robot. Press the brush firmly down onto the post until it clicks into place. Give it a gentle tug to confirm it's secure. Spin the brush by hand — it should rotate freely without wobbling.

Step 5: Repeat for the Second Side Brush

If your Shark Ion has two side brushes (one on each side), repeat Steps 2 through 4 for the second brush. Most Shark Ion models have one side brush on the right side; some models have two.

Step 6: Test the Robot

Power on your Shark Ion and run a short cleaning cycle. Watch the side brushes to confirm they spin consistently and sweep debris toward the center suction path. The robot should clean more effectively along walls and in corners.

How Often Should You Replace Side Brushes?

Under normal use (daily cleaning of a 1,000 to 2,000 sq ft home), side brushes typically last 3 to 6 months. If you have pets or high-traffic areas, check the brushes monthly. Keeping the brushes free of hair tangles is the single best way to extend their lifespan.

Pro Tip: Buy in Bulk

Side brushes are inexpensive and wear out regularly. Buying a 4-pack or 6-pack saves money and ensures you always have a replacement on hand. BotPartsDirect sells Shark Ion side brushes in multi-packs at a significant discount over single-brush pricing.
